CNU leads virtual international conference amid Covid-19 pandemic

THE Covid-19 pandemic has failed to deter the aim of Cebu Normal University (CNU) to become a multidisciplinary research university of education in the country — and even in the world.

The academic institution spearheaded the second edition of the International Conferences on Arts and Sciences (Icas) on Sept. 29-30, 2020. It held the event online as physical gathering is impossible and risky amid the global health crisis sparked by the coronavirus disease 2019, a respiratory illness caused by Sars-CoV-2.

Organized by the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) of CNU, the virtual conference was graced by speakers from universities in Australia and The Netherlands.

The Icas online event carried the theme, “Arts and Sciences: Unleashing Creativity, Resilience, and Scientific Inventions in the New Normal.”

The invited speakers of the event included Dr. Jeff Harvey, terrestrial ecology researcher of Netherlands Institute of Ecology; Kirsty Bucknel, an organizational psychologist from Australia; Dr. Bean Searle, senior lecturer at the Department of Psychology in Macquarie University in New South Wales, Australia; and Dr. Jennifer Wilson, a behavioral scientist from Australia.

For this year’s event, there were only three streams of presentation: language, literature and communication; natural sciences, mathematics and physical education; and humanities and social sciences.

The second Icas aimed to provide an opportunity for researchers to upgrade their capabilities through the sharing of best practices and for them to meet other international advocates on research for the possibility of forging linkages and partnership even despite the academic institutions around the world experiencing the negative effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
